The project is expected to attract about $1.2 billion in private investment and generate an estimated 8,000 - 10,000 jobs over a decade. Construction is planned for late 2009.
This project, previously referred to as an Inland Port, has had a long and controversial history, which at one point had included barges shipping containers from Charleston to Santee via Lakes Marion and Moultrie. That component has since been
abandoned. The current plan is to move containers from the Port of Charleston to the Santee "mega-hub'" via trucks and rail.
